  1. ‘Ebola Free’ as a term has occurred in the media alongside WHO’s declaration to mark end of Ebola transmission 42 days after last human case tests negative for Ebola Virus in affected countries.
  2.  Ebola Free status is achieved ONLY when there is assurance of safe containment of the Ebola Virus in laboratories.
  3. Given that the virus is Zoonotic (i.e. can be found in some animals e.g. bats), and its persistence in survivors tissues for a period of time (up to 9 months*) post treatment, use of the term EBOLA-FREE is INAPPROPRIATE as used in 1. above.
  4. Preferred terms are:a. STOPPAGE OF HUMAN TO HUMAN TRANSMISSION OF EBOLA, or
    b. STOPPAGE OF TRANSMISSION IN HUMAN POPULATION, or
    c. FREE OF EBOLA TRANSMISSION IN HUMAN POPULATION
  5. This is in anticipation of Guinea’s successful stoppage of transmission of Ebola Virus in human population in that country by 28th December, 2015.
